About Through Unity: Our Story

Through Unity was founded in December 2007 by two bereaved fathers: Richard Taylor, whose son Damilola Taylor was tragically murdered at the age of just 10 in Peckham in 2000; and Ian Levy, whose son Robert Levy was murdered in September 2004 when he heroically rushed to the aid of a boy he did not know who was being threatened with a knife in Hackney Grove.

Both men shared the same vision: to bring families together and to unite their voices. They wanted to campaign and work alongside other families to make our streets safer. They wanted to give young people jobs and hope for a bright future. They were part of a group of early campaigners and educators working with young people at the time, teaching them and warning of the dangers of drugs, gangs, and weapons-carrying.

They were quicky joined by many families who brought with them their own skills and passions to make our communities safer. Among the families who shaped our work were:

·        Peter Sinclair, who is married to Dolores Altaras, whose son Tom-Louis Easton was killed in September 2006 whilst working as a youth worker and sound engineer at the EC1 Music Project in Islington providing music training to young people. They set up the Flavasum Trust, which continues to work with young people.

·        Nathaniel Levy, son of Ian Levy and brother of Robert Levy.

·        Lorna Simpson, a current trustee of Through Unity, and founder of Jamie Simpson Trust. Lorna became a trustee in 2010. Her son Jamie Simpson was a manager of a Matalan store in Hackney when he was murdered in 2008, during a robbery of the store.

·        Jeanette and Jessica Singleton also worked to shape Through Unity after the loss of son and brother Lewis Singleton in 2007, who was killed as he walked home from a night out with a friend.

·        Yvonne Lawson served as a trustee of Through Unity. She founded the Godwin Lawson Foundation after her son Godwin Lawson, who was a promising footballer, was killed trying to protect his friend from an attacker in 2010.

·        Joeine Fearon not only served as a trustee of Through Unity but also worked tirelessly as a volunteer, setting up and running our early family days. She came to Through Unity after her daughter Camara lost her best friend CJ Hendricks to knife crime 2008. Sadly Joeine went on to lose her niece Sian Blake and her two young nephews Zachary and Amon, who were killed by their father 2015.

What all these families have in common is the desire to build a legacy of hope out of pain and tragedy.

Over the years our mission has remained the same, but our focus has shifted. As an early community safety charity working to prevent youth violence, we were eventually joined by so many others. Many of the families themselves went on to set up charities and we did not want to overshadow their work. At the same time, we could see that there was still a huge need for care and support for those bereaved through homicide and that this was where the gap in services was.

Today we care for families bereaved through homicide, creating safe spaces for them to come together to support one another and heal. We want to support and empower their organisations in the work they do, helping their organisations to be stronger and more successful. We also want to help them be the collective voice that they envisioned from the beginning.
